How does an Average Indian Spend the Day?

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) recently carried out an analysis of "Time Use in India 2024". The all-India Time Use Survey was carried out for the year 2024 (from January to December) for people above ages 6. The survey details the use of time in an average Indian's life.

A pie graph showing the number of hours an average Indian spends on doing different activities across the day, based on detailed research conducted.

In collaboration with InvestorSight by 7i Ventures, we ran the above analysis that shows data for an average indian (female and male, both from urban and rural India).

  • The average Indian spends about 50% of their day in sleep and maintenance.

  • The second highest use of time is at work (3 hours), followed by

  • Household activities and Leisure (including sports) for about 2.7 hours each.

  • 2.1 hours each day are spend on socializing and religious practices,

  • While the least amount of time (1.5 hours) is spent on learning.

Do you think this is an accurate representation of your day?

The questions we really should be asking are if India is moving forward in a sustainable manner based on how an average Indian spends their day?

While the data may have averaged out on different age groups (students, stay at home spouses and working professionals), what do you think?
